John A. “Johnny Redd” McClenney II, Owner- Another Chance and Uptown Tanz International Salon and Spa & Barbers/Nails Shop

John McClenney, II is a native of Montgomery, Alabama, who was also a Master Cosmetologist. In addition, the discipline to run not one but three businesses was instilled in him by his father, one of the first black police officers of the Montgomery Police Department.

As a teenager he got his start in the hair care industry by picking up towels and sweeping floors at Andre’s Studio after school. He was also cutting his fellow football players’ hair. John later started shampooing at Andre’s Studio, earning a modest salary of $125 a week.

Upon graduating from Sidney Lanier High School, he joined the United States Marine Corp. After serving his country, he returned to Montgomery to attend Alabama State University (ASU). While attending ASU, this sparked a vision and a dream. He began working in his mother’s salon while attending John M. Patterson Technical College as he pursued his degree in Cosmetology.

Upon receiving his Cosmetology license, he taught Advanced Cosmetology at John M. Patterson Technical College. He is an award winning Master Cosmetologist, Educational Specialist, and a multiple business owner. He has been featured in multiple international hair magazines. He has had the pleasure to serve on many boards as well as involve himself and his businesses with several community service projects. John has hosted educational seminars across the country and has done platform work for Bonners Brothers, Joyce Williams, and the Johnson Brothers of Detroit, Michigan. He is currently a member of the Virginia College Board of Cosmetology. In 2013, Uptown Tanz Salon & Barbers held a hair clinic, hosted by celebrity hairstylist “Derek J” of Atlanta, Georgia, who has been featured on the Atlanta Housewives reality show.

He is a visionary, a loving son, a caring brother, a devoted father, and friend to many. In addition he is a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, where Juan D. McFarland serves as pastor.

GTM: DESCRIBE THAT MOMENT THAT MADE YOU WANT TO STEP OUT ON YOUR OWN.

JOHN: I knew in 1997, my dream had become a reality when I purchased Uptown Exclusive, my first salon in Old Cloverdale. I was the first black to own and operate a business in this exclusive and historic area of Montgomery. This was a multi-cultural salon, which offered services to all, no matter what their ethnicity. The salon was thriving; I had a professional staff of cosmetologists and was responsible for running my own business. This dream grew into what is now Uptown Tanz International Salon and Spa.

The challenge of owning and operating my own business gave me the drive and determination to venture out again in 2010. No it was not another salon, but Another Chance Package Store. Another Chance provides Montgomery and surrounding areas with the ultimate resources for spirits, wines and beer.

GTM: WHAT IS IMPORTANT TO BE SUCCESSFUL?

JOHN: I believe education is the key to success. Moreover, without dedication, determination, sacrifice, and keeping God first, nothing is possible. Once you have education, no one can take that away. Not only do I educate my employees by offering continuing education classes and workshops at my salon, I also educate my customers about their own hair care.

GTM: YOU OPERATE IN A FRAGMENTED INDUSTRY. HOW DO YOU STAY COMPETITIVE?

JOHN: I stay true to my mission statement, which is “To provide our clients with the highest degree of customer service in a professional and unique setting. Our team is professional, talented, and continuously educated. We should strive to provide a high-quality and great customer service to all who enter our doors. And we go the extra mile to accomplish with passion, expert advice and the utmost professionalism on a daily basis”.

GTM: TELL US ABOUT YOUR UPCOMING PROJECT.

JOHN: Anyone that knows “Johnny Redd” knows, “I’m always on the grind”. I am always on the lookout for a new business venture. Who knows three businesses may become four!
