Montgomery, AL – The Alabama Legislative Black Caucus (ALBC) is proud to announce the election of Representative Napoleon Bracy, Jr. as Chair and Senator Merika Coleman as Vice Chair. Leadership elections for the ALBC take place every two years, and both legislators bring extensive experience to their new roles. In the previous term, Sen. Coleman served as Chair, while Rep. Bracy held the position of Vice Chair.
Rep. Bracy expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead, stating, “I am honored to serve as Chair of the Alabama Legislative Black Caucus. We remain steadfast in our commitment to advocating for the people of Alabama and addressing the critical issues that impact their lives. Our core values—rooted in diversity, equity, and inclusion—are fundamental to both Alabama and the broader American promise.”
The ALBC strongly condemns recent efforts to undermine diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, particularly the Trump administration’s politically motivated executive order banning DEI programs. “We reject the so-called ‘colorblind’ ideology pushed by the MAGA movement, which seeks to erase the progress made through DEI initiatives,” Bracy continued. “Ignoring racial inequality does not eliminate it—true equality comes from acknowledging and addressing historical and systemic disparities.”
As part of its ongoing mission, the ALBC remains committed to supporting DEI programs and ensuring that Black American history continues to be taught in schools. “We cannot allow our history to be rewritten or erased,” said Sen. Coleman. “Understanding our past—including its injustices—is essential to building a more just and equitable future. The ALBC will continue to fight for the truth, ensuring that future generations learn from history rather than repeating its mistakes.”
