PIKE ROAD, AL – With the addition of a new class of students in the 2018-2019 school year, the Pike Road Schools Patriots will compete at the varsity level for the first time. In preparation for this exciting milestone, the Pike Road Schools System (PRS) is excited to announce the hire of two energetic and experienced coaches: Coach Robb McGaughey, Head Boys’ Basketball Coach, and Coach Keegan Bell, Assistant Boys’ Basketball Coach.
Coach McGaughey is a Montgomery native whose experience includes several successful years as an assistant basketball coach and middle school football coach at Montgomery Academy, and more recently, head coach for the Montgomery Catholic boys’ varsity basketball team. When the opportunity at PRS arose, McGaughey says it was the people of Pike Road who really drew him in.
“The more people I talked to, the more interested I became,” McGaughey said. “Talking to a lot of parents about the school, and hearing how people are excited about the school, the growth and the opportunity was very special.”
Coach Bell, whose father coached both college and high school ball, has basketball in his blood. Recruited from Hazel Green, AL, Bell played college ball at both Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga before playing professionally in Iceland. Returning to his home state of Alabama, Bell felt compelled to work with the area’s young people, noting that, through programming and instruction, there were huge opportunities to improve the recruitment opportunities for young Alabama players. Bell began coaching in Huntsville, and later moved to Montgomery where he became fast friends with McGaughey.
“I am really excited about Pike Road Schools,” Bell said. “I just think it’s a magical place that’s growing, and I can see coach and I putting down roots here and just starting something from scratch.”
Building a new program comes with both excitement and challenges, but with community support and collaboration among coaching staff, McGaughey and Bell are prepared and planning for growth even years down the road.
“We are excited to have Coach McGaughey and Coach Bell joining the PRS Patriots Athletics Team,” said David Sikes, Pike Road Historic School Principal and interim Athletic Director. “They are excellent people and talented coaches who bring energy and credibility to our young program.”
