Is it me or is a fact that sometimes priorities are misplaced in our society today?   When I think of the word priorities, it brings to my mind something that is valued more than something else.  Actually, the definition is: something which takes precedence; something which must be done or taken care of first.  This definition has really given me a reason to pause and reflect not only on what the word means, but to also reevaluate my priorities.

As I look over my life, I can truly say that I have had a tendency to sometimes get my priorities mixed up!  I believe if you are honest with yourself, you can probably say the same.  The truth is, if we take a look around in our society today, most individuals have the wrong priorities.  “What do I mean that society has wrong priorities?”  Based on my personal experience, communities across the United States have a track record of placing more value on temporary things rather than valuing permanent things that will have a more profound impact on the world as a whole.  Let’s discuss this subject in more detail.

First, let’s define temporary and permanent.  Temporary is something that is lasting or serving for a time only.  Permanent means something that is existing perpetually. It is intended to serve, function for a long, indefinite period.  I respectively submit to you that entertainment, fashion, popularity, fancy cars and large houses are temporary things that are really given too much priority in America!  Not to mention how we waste time, effort, and money to obtain these things that will last only for a time.  On the other hand, the more permanent things like a relationship with God and others are put on the back burner.  I know this is true because of the way we treat one another.  Now, I want to put a disclaimer here.  There is nothing wrong with having material possessions.  Unfortunately, the problem comes when people place more value on having material possessions than cultiivating a relationship with God and with others.  Individuals must remember to focus on the permanent things instead of the temporary things.  What am I saying?  If you are a believer in Christ, than you don’t have to worry about obtaining temporary things. Why is this so?  Jesus said, if we (believers) seek God’s Kingdom and His Righteousness, than all these (material items) other things will be added to us.  This truth has proven valuable to me every time I get my priorities out of order.  Hopefully, this truth can help you too.

In a previous article I discussed the importance of each person learning to accept change.  It is often stated things must change in our communities!  Could it be that communities would experience permanent change if we each applied this truth to reevaluate our priorities?
