Devin King knows what it’s like to work, build and figure out the next move.

Raised outside of Selma in Dallas County, King grew up visiting Montgomery and always had a connection to the Capital City. When college came around, he chose Alabama State University and eventually made Montgomery home.

But his path into financial services wasn’t something he had mapped out from the beginning.

King spent about 12 years working at UPS before an opportunity with Primerica introduced him to the financial industry. The deeper he got into the business, the more he realized how many everyday people were trying to make major financial decisions without always having access to the right information.

“I learned that a lot of people didn’t know how insurance products worked,” King said. “Most people didn’t know anything about investing money.”

For King, that became motivation.

He began earning licenses in different areas of financial services, eventually expanding into mortgage lending. Today, his work allows him to have conversations with families about homeownership, insurance, saving, investing and preparing for the future.

But King isn’t interested in just throwing financial terms at people. His approach is about meeting people where they are.

When someone tells him they want to buy a home, for example, he starts with the basics: How is your credit? What does your debt look like? How much have you saved?

Then they build from there.

King encourages potential homeowners to start preparing three to six months before they plan to buy. For some, that may mean paying down debt. For others, it could mean saving more money or simply learning how the process works.

“If that’s the goal, I want to help you get there,” King said.

That attitude speaks to the bigger reason behind his work.

King believes access to financial education matters, particularly in communities where conversations about investing, insurance, retirement and building wealth may not always happen at the kitchen table.

And while finances are a major part of his professional life, they aren’t all of who Devin King is.

He proudly calls himself a “girl dad” and says much of his time outside of work is spent with his daughters. He enjoys exercising, cooking, grilling and having friends over for good food and fellowship. He is also becoming more involved in Montgomery through Hutchinson Missionary Baptist Church, networking and community events.

For King, the journey is still growing.

From Dallas County to Alabama State, from more than a decade at UPS to building a career in financial services, his story is one of taking what he has learned and using it to help somebody else move forward.

And sometimes, that first move is simply helping somebody realize their goal isn’t as far away as they thought.
