By Jamal Thomas
Khye Cunningham is the owner of Khye’s Creations. He is a 15-year-old rising sophomore at Valiant Cross Academy, and a member of Saint John’s A.M.E. Church.
I had the opportunity to chat with Mr. Cunningham:
Tell us about Khye’s Creations. How long have you been in business?
Khye’s Creations is a home-based bakery. Our products include sweet treats and pastries, but our menu is continuously expanding. Khye’s Creations launched in January of this year.
Share with us the events that led to you start Khye’s Creations.
My passion of baking comes from my early childhood, where I started off with cooking with family, but suddenly ventured into baking. I opened this business out of my niche for the culinary arts. Valiant Cross Academy’s Black Entrepreneurship program granted me the opportunity to create Khye’s Creations.
You currently attend Valiant Cross Academy. How do you balance academics and running a business?
Academics always come first before my baking. My baking takes place on my evenings, or on the weekends where I am completely available.
When do you graduate and what are your plans afterwards?
I graduate in 2027. I plan on attending college at Johnson and Wales University under their Culinary Arts program with a Bachelor’s degree in Food and Beverage Entrepreneurship.
What do you enjoy most about your business?
I enjoy the freedom to experiment with my creations and I enjoy being my own boss.
What are some of your hobbies?
Besides baking and cooking, I am a self-taught percussionist and pianist, play golf, and a black belt in Taekwondo.
Where do you see Khye’s Creations in the next 5 years?
In 5 years, I envision Khye’s Creations expanding into a storefront and offering a wider variety of product to sell, while maintaining the same homemade taste.
