MONTGOMERY — The Herb Block Foundation presents five panel exhibitions displaying reproductions of the work of legendary Washington Post editorial cartoonist Herb Block, famously known as “Herblock.”

The goal of these exhibitions is to promote Herblock’s efforts to defend the rights and freedoms of Americans through his political cartoons. Prepared by Curator Harry L. Katz, these exhibitions can be used for teaching or promoting the American topics that reflect Herblock’s passions – Education, Democracy, Civil Rights, the Presidency and the Environment. Together all five exhibits present a fascinating history of Herblock’s 72 year career, spanning from 1929 to the new millennium. A seven minute DVD, “Herblock: The Man Behind the Cartoons”, illustrated brochures, lesson plans, and copies of the autobiography Herblock: A Cartoonist’s Life are included.

Herblock believed that a strong democracy is dependent upon an informed electorate. He believed that a strong education is what gives people the opportunity to reach their highest potential, to become respectable leaders and to live as productive members of society. Herblock viewed teachers, students and their education as a top priority in the future of the nations. His legacy lives on, teaching and inspiring through his political cartoons, and in his grant, foundation and scholarship programs.

The exhibit “School Bell: Education & Democracy in America” will be on display at Juliette Hampton Morgan Memorial Library during the month of October. The public is invited to come, view the exhibit and leave comments about it.
