HUNTSVILLE, AL- The Marilyn Lands for State House District 10 campaign celebrated a solid victory in Tuesday’s special election.

She spoke with supporters shortly after receiving a call from her opponent, Teddy Powell, to congratulate her on her win in the House District 10 special election.

“Today, Alabama women and families sent a clear message that will be heard in Montgomery and across the nation. Our legislature must repeal Alabama’s no-exceptions abortion ban, fully restore access to IVF, and protect the right to contraception,” Lands said.

“To my campaign team and volunteers, both in this run and in my last one, I want you to know how much your support means to me. I could not have done this alone and have been so incredibly blessed by the people around me. I look forward to representing everyone in District 10 and building a brighter future for Alabama. The campaign might have ended, but our work is just beginning” Lands continued.

Lands expressed a commitment to working on behalf of all voters in District 10, including her opponent’s supporters. She is committed to following the example of her mentor and friend, former Representative Mike Ball.

Thanks to everyone involved in her grassroots campaign, Lands became the first Democrat to flip a red district in the Alabama Legislature in over a decade.

Lands’ campaign focused on removing Alabama’s tax on groceries, expanding Medicaid, and protecting reproductive rights. Last month, Lands released a campaign ad in which she shares how overjoyed she was 20 years ago to be expecting a second child. This excitement turned to dread during the pregnancy when she learned the baby had a severe genetic condition and would not survive. Lands says she “faced the hardest decision of her life” as she recounts how her doctors all advised that she terminate the pregnancy, informing her that her health was “at risk because these babies often don’t even survive to birth and can die in utero.
