Montgomery, AL—October 11, 2024—In light of Tuesday’s announcement by the U.S.
Department of Justice regarding charges against an Oklahoma City resident for conspiring to
conduct a terrorist attack on Election Day, the Montgomery County Probate Court is taking
proactive steps to safeguard the upcoming election and ensure the safety of voters.
The Department of Justice charged Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, 27, for attempting to provide material
support to ISIS and plotting a violent attack targeting Election Day gatherings. While this specific
threat has been neutralized, the Montgomery County Probate Court, along with law enforcement
partners, remains dedicated to securing local polling places and maintaining the integrity of the
election process.
The Montgomery County Probate Court will continue to work closely with the Montgomery
County Sheriff’s Office, as well as state and federal law enforcement agencies, to ensure all polling
locations are safe. This includes law enforcement presence at polling locations and real-time
monitoring to ensure the protection of voters and election workers.
“We are fully committed to protecting the democratic process and ensuring that the citizens of
Montgomery County feel safe when they exercise their right to vote,” said Probate Judge J C Love.
“We will continue to work with the Sheriff’s Office to protect our dedicated poll workers and allow
voters to participate with confidence. The strength of our democracy lies in the ability of all
citizens to vote without fear or intimidation.”
Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham echoed these sentiments, adding, “We take any
threat to public safety seriously, and our team is ready to respond. On Election Day, we will be out
ensuring the safety of every voter and the smooth operation of the electoral process. Your safety is
our priority, and we are committed to protecting our community.”
While there are no known specific threats to the area, the Montgomery County Probate Court and
the Sheriff’s Office will remain vigilant in working with other state and federal agencies to prevent
any potential disruptions and to uphold the sanctity of the election.
