For Loyd Jenkins, becoming the Executive Director of Montgomery Regional Airport is more than a new title—it’s the opportunity to lead an organization that has been a significant part of his professional journey. After serving as Airport Chief of Police and later as Interim Executive Director, Jenkins now oversees the airport with a vision focused on growth, innovation, and community impact.
Jenkins said his previous roles prepared him well for the transition into executive leadership. During his time as police chief, he became involved in nearly every aspect of airport operations, giving him a broad understanding of what it takes to successfully manage the airport and prepare for future growth.
One of his primary goals is expanding air service to better serve business travelers, government officials, and leisure passengers. Jenkins highlighted the airport’s Houston route as an important step toward attracting new economic opportunities while strengthening Montgomery’s connection to major markets. He believes expanding air service will benefit not only travelers but the entire River Region.
The airport is also undergoing several improvements designed to enhance the passenger experience. Current projects include a newly renovated baggage claim area, upgrades to terminal restrooms, new flooring throughout the terminal, and the construction of an ADA- accessible business center. These improvements are part of a $4 million renovation project aimed at modernizing the airport and preparing it for future growth.
Looking beyond the terminal, Jenkins emphasized the airport’s role as a driver of economic development. Through the Alabama Tax Incentive Program, nearly $2.9 million has been secured to prepare approximately 300 acres of airport property for future cargo operations and industrial development. These investments will help position Montgomery Regional Airport as an attractive destination for new businesses while creating additional opportunities for economic growth throughout the city.
As Executive Director, Jenkins also recognizes the importance of investing in the people who make the airport successful. One of his first-year priorities is fostering a positive workplace culture where employees feel supported and valued. He believes that when employees enjoy coming to work, travelers ultimately receive a better experience. When asked what advice he would offer young people interested in aviation, airport management, or public service, Jenkins encouraged them to pursue their goals with confidence and determination. He emphasized the importance of setting long-term goals, planning ahead, and remaining committed to personal and professional growth.
Looking toward the future, Jenkins hopes Montgomery Regional Airport will continue building on its recent momentum while becoming a premier airport known for reliable service, modern facilities, and strong partnerships throughout the community. His vision is to create an airport that not only connects people to destinations but also serves as a catalyst for economic development and a source of pride for the City of Montgomery.
