Pilgrim Rest hosts 9th Annual College Sunday

Montgomery, AL- Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church hosted its 9th Annual College Sunday last weekend. The theme was “Begin with the End in Mind”.

University of Alabama at Birmingham student Mikayla Holley gave the occasion and greetings from the church. “Our theme means keeping God as the focus of the goals we set.”

Pastor Lee B. Walker, Jr. of New Home Missionary Baptist Church in Mt. Meigs was the guest speaker. In his message “It’s Nothing” Walker encouraged college students to stay focused on their goals. “Focus on the promise, follow God’s plan, and faithfully praise.”

Two award presentations were made. The recipients were:

Emerging Student Leader Award- Walter Carr, Oakwood College

Distinguished Alumni Award- Jessie Johnson Crawford, Alabama State Alumnae.

In addition, scholarships were presented to twenty-one students to help purchase books.

Reverend Walter E. Ellis, Pastor of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist talked about the importance of youth getting an education as he was giving the closing remarks. “Jesus plus education equals success.”

Special guests for the event were Mayor Steven Reed, City of Montgomery; Mayor Timothy Ragland, City of Talladega; Mayor Tony Haygood, City of Tuskegee; Dr. Cynthia Warrick, Stillman College President; and Willie Durham, Past Chairman of The Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce.  

There were performances by Stillman College Choir and Stillman College Blue Pride Marching Band.
