MONTGOMERY, Alabama – The Serious Injury Law Group recently awarded $16,000 in scholarships to winners of its first Black History Month essay contest, which encouraged high school students throughout the Black Belt to honor “Living History.”

Entrants were asked to write about individuals they consider to be heroes in their own communities. The 16 essay contest winners, the subjects of their essays, their parents and their teachers were presented with their $1,000 scholarship checks at an awards banquet at Central restaurant in downtown Montgomery on April 20, 2017.

“We were so pleased to have received so many entries in our first essay contest. With the support of their communities and the celebration of their achievements, the future is bright for Alabama’s children,” said Gerald C. Brooks Jr., co-founder of Serious Injury Law Group. “We just want to do our part to support them and to celebrate those often unsung heroes – teachers, grandparents, ministers and more — who make a positive difference in their lives. As a product of the Black Belt myself, born and raised in Sumter County, it was a personal privilege to give back to a community that has given so much to me.”

We are honored to be able to shine a spotlight on these young men and women. We’ve decided to call them our ‘Serious Scholars.’”
