Central Montgomery Optimist Club Celebrates “Respect for Law” with Lt. Willie E. Stewart

By Jamal Thomas

In a room filled with community leaders and dedicated citizens, the Central Montgomery Optimist Club held its annual Respect for Law program—a cornerstone event designed to bridge the gap between the public and the men and women who wear the badge. This year, the atmosphere was one of profound gratitude as the club turned its spotlight on a local hero whose life has been defined by the uniform: Lieutenant Willie E. Stewart.

The “Respect for Law” initiative, a hallmark of Optimist International since 1965, serves as a vital reminder of the essential role law enforcement plays in maintaining the fabric of a peaceful society. By honoring individuals who go above and beyond, the club reinforces a simple but powerful message: local law enforcement officers are not just enforcers—they are neighbors, mentors, and protectors.

Lt. Willie E. Stewart is a name synonymous with service in Montgomery. Currently serving as the Commander of the Community Policing Bureau, Stewart’s career is a masterclass in multifaceted dedication. His resume reads like a tribute to the American spirit.

Lt. Willie E. Stewart

As a military legacy, Lt. Stewart is a decorated U.S. Navy veteran with nearly 20 years of military service, including combat experience. In addition, he has over 17 years with the Montgomery Police Department, earning numerous awards for bravery and community engagement. Lastly, he is a proud Faulkner University alumnus with a B.S. in Criminal Justice and graduate studies at Alabama State University.

During the ceremony, Lt. Stewart spoke with the quiet authority of a man who has seen both the front lines of conflict and the quiet streets of Montgomery’s neighborhoods. He spoke candidly about the gravity of the badge, famously stating:

”This badge is not a shield to hide behind—it is a symbol of integrity, respect, honor, courage, service, and fortitude.”

His message resonated deeply with the Optimist members, emphasizing that true “Respect for Law” isn’t earned through authority alone, but through the consistent building of trust and the empowerment of the next generation. As the leader of the Montgomery Police Athletic League (MPAL), Stewart spends his “off-hours” mentoring youth, proving that his commitment to the law is rooted in a love for the people it protects.

The Central Montgomery Optimist Club’s recognition of Lt. Stewart highlights a crucial truth: in an era where the relationship between police and community is often scrutinized, figures like Stewart serve as the ultimate bridge. By celebrating his 17-year policing career and his unwavering military service, the club reminds us all that respect is a two-way street—paved with sacrifice and maintained with heart.
