New Home, A New Chapter for The Salvation Army of Montgomery

After nearly four years without a permanent home, The Salvation Army of Montgomery has opened the doors to a new facility on Carter Hill Road, marking an exciting new chapter for the organization and the community it serves.

The newly renovated facility provides a permanent place for individuals and families throughout Montgomery and the River Region to find help, connection and hope. The building includes a food pantry, clothing closet and worship center, along with spaces designed to serve people of all ages, including seniors and children participating in after-school programs.

“We are excited for what’s going to happen inside of this building. No matter how young you are, no matter how old you are, you are welcome through the doors here at Carter Hill Road. This celebration is the hope that we get to continue to bring to our neighbors in the River Region,” said Captain Thomas Johnson, local commanding officer for The Salvation Army of Montgomery.

Meeting More Than Immediate Needs
While the new facility provides a place to serve, the work happening inside its doors reaches far beyond the building itself.

The Salvation Army provides practical assistance to neighbors facing difficult circumstances through its food pantry, community meals, clothing assistance, utility assistance and emergency social services. The Corps also offers access to a computer lab where individuals can work on resumes and other important needs, along with employment and job-readiness support, educational resources, case management and referrals to additional community services.

Youth and adult programs, family services, spiritual care and worship provide additional opportunities for people to find support and connection. The Salvation Army also responds when the community faces unexpected challenges through disaster assistance and seasonal programs, including Christmas assistance.

The goal is to meet the whole person, addressing immediate physical needs while also helping people find the resources, encouragement and support needed to move forward.

“So, we have that unique ability to speak to the spirit and soul of a person as well as their physical need,” said Kelly Igleheart, USA Southern Territory Territorial Commander for The Salvation Army.

Looking Toward a Center of Hope
The new facility is an important step forward, but The Salvation Army knows there is still a significant need in the Montgomery and River Region community.

One of the organization’s next goals is the development of a permanent homeless shelter, currently envisioned as the Center of Hope. The proposed facility would provide housing and meals for up to 75 people experiencing homelessness and offer additional resources to help individuals move toward stability.

Making that vision a reality will take the support of the entire community
Captain Johnson and the Montgomery Advisory Board have been working diligently to identify a suitable location and build the partnerships necessary to move the project forward. They are seeking connections with community leaders, businesses, organizations and individuals who may be able to help identify a location, provide resources or connect The Salvation Army with others who can help bring the vision to life. The need for a permanent shelter is clear, but so is the opportunity to create something that can serve the entire River Region for years to come.

Hope That Continues All Year
The needs of a community do not disappear when the holidays are over. Through Army of Hope, The Salvation Army invites individuals to become monthly supporters who help provide a steady source of support for programs and services throughout the year. Army of Hope is about making hope a year-round commitment to our community.
