When Dr. Dominique Askew Shamburger and Dr. Carl Shamburger met at The Outlet Shops of Grand River in Leeds, Alabama, it was love at first sight. Dominique says, “Carl and I met through a mutual friend and we all decided to go shopping together.” After a few years of courtship, the happy couple joined together in holy matrimony on March 29, 2013. Although Carl is a native of Pine Hill in Wilcox County and Dominique’s childhood memories are rooted in Birmingham, they’ve made Montgomery their home for the past six years with their two sons, Carl III, and Caleb, and now they have a new addition to their family, Clay. Not only are they partners in life, they’re partners in their dental practice-Montgomery Dental Arts.

Gumptown Magazine was charmed to interview this power couple who’s making tremendous strides in the capital city by providing high quality comprehensive dental care, and giving back to their community through volunteer service and involvement. When it comes to achievements, it’s evident that Dominique and Carl Shamburger’s hard work and dedication have paved the way for their monumental successes. They’ve received numerous awards and recognitions during dentistry school ranging from outstanding accomplishments to remarkable technical skills.

Recently, Dr. Domonique was awarded Medical Professional of the Year by the Black Girl Excellence Awards. In addition, she focuses on advancing the profession of dentistry through various memberships; and serves on the Board of Trustees representing the Second District Dental Society. She fulfills her civic duties as a volunteer adjunct professor at the University of Alabama, and she’s an active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.

Naturally, Dr. Carl has a desire to serve others with reliability and commitment. While demonstrating commitment to social justice and multicultural education, he was awarded the Drum Major for Justice Award presented at the Wilcox County Democratic Conference. Additionally, he fulfills his civic duties as a volunteer adjunct professor at UAB School of Dentistry. He is also an active member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.

The dynamic duo partnered together and opened their dental practice’s doors to the city of Montgomery on April 10, 2017. During the interview, we asked the questions, what lead them to establish a practice and what inspires you both to do what you do? The Shamburger’s said, “We wanted to build something collectively that would allow us to practice dentistry together. We have a heart for people. We’re inspired to positively increase a patient’s self-esteem by improving their smile, providing dental care that assists them with properly chewing again, or alleviating their pain.”

With a friendly staff of seven and two compassionate doctors, their goal is to create a family environment among their staff and patients. Mr. and Mrs. Shamburger says, “We truly view each one of our patients as an extension of our family, and therefore, we treat them as such. We pride ourselves on doing the best we can to provide a comfortable and relaxing environment, as well as state-of-the-art technology and advanced dental practices.”

Jointly, their passion makes a difference in the community as a whole. Dominique and Carl assisted Medical Advocacy and Outreach with spearheading their own dental clinic and served as co-dental directors/consultants. This has helped provide dental care to individuals with infectious diseases who may have encountered barriers to receive dental services.

Also, the couple desires to create positive change amongst our African American youth. In the future, the Shamburger’s has a longing to sponsor young men and women through a mentoring program to help young people of color embark on careers within healthcare and entrepreneurship.

They both agree that working together has been an asset to their practice and patients. Though the couple share their lives together, they’ve also achieved individual accomplishments, adopted individual interests and continue to thrive with two unique personalities. As life and business partners, they’ve mastered leveraging each other, lifting one another up and ultimately taking on more that life has to offer with the support of a like-minded partner.

As they prepare to embrace another bundle of joy, keeping their marriage and family in the center of what they do motivates them to continue on their journey of success. Dominique and Carl stated, “Our children are a part of our greatest accomplishments. Building a family and pursuing the American dream in the process is a blessing to us, and we are thankful for the opportunities we have to experience all of life in its entirety.”
