Alabama Democrats focus on consumer protection

Montgomery, AL– The Alabama House Democratic Caucus held its weekly press conference yesterday afternoon.

Rep. Marilyn Lands (HD-10, Huntsville) has introduced the Right to Repair Act, HB476, that gives people the right to repair their own electronics and software or use an independent service provider of their choice, rather than being forced to use the one chosen by the manufacturer.

Rep. Kelvin Lawrence (HD-69) commented on his support of HB516, sponsored by Rep. Prince Chestnut, which would prevent someone from using a computer to trick a consumer into thinking they are interacting with a real human being, when in fact, they are interacting with a computer program.

Rep. Kenyatte Hassell (HD-78, Montgomery) explained his support for HB466, sponsored by Rep. A.J. McCampbell, which would require that when advertising a service contract, the advertisement must disclose if the refund amount will be less than the provider’s cost to repair or replace the item. The bill also
ensures that any limitations, exceptions, or exclusions in the service contract must be disclosed.
