MONTGOMERY – Cheryl D. Davis, former chief financial officer of The Enstar Group Inc., has joined Associated Business Services. The longtime certified public accountant has been with ABS since March.

Davis first worked at ABS during the tax season earlier this year and then General Manager Nan Lloyd asked Davis to consider joining the firm.

“I kind of fit right in,” Davis said. “I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the people. It’s like a family atmosphere here.”

Davis had been retired for about two years after a 29-year career with The Enstar Group, which had its headquarters in Montgomery, before relocating to Bermuda in 2007.

“After I got here (ABS) and talked to some clients and I started working again, I realized that I missed using my abilities,” Davis said. “I feel like we’re making a difference with small businesses. We’re helping small businesses realize their potential to grow and create more jobs or start new businesses. I feel like I’m making a difference in a small way now.”

Her job at ABS is very different than what she did at The Enstar Group, where Davis was doing Securities and Exchange Commission reporting; mergers and acquisitions; international tax; buying and selling companies; and working closely with attorneys on litigation. Davis also did a lot of traveling to New York, Bermuda and London. She joined the company as vice president of corporate tax and in 1998 moved up the ladder as people left the firm, which was under financial duress. The Enstar Group, which was formerly called KinderCare Inc., filed for bankruptcy the day after Davis was promoted to chief financial officer in May 1991.

Before joining The Enstar Group and moving to Montgomery in 1988, Davis worked about 6½ years for Peat Marwick, which later became KPMG and is one of the big four accounting firms. She was a senior tax manager.

“We are so fortunate to have someone with Cheryl’s credentials and reputation join ABS,” Lloyd said. “In a very short time, Cheryl has become an important part of the team.”

Davis received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of South Alabama in Mobile. She was born and grew up in West Point, Ga. She moved to Anniston as a teenager.

“I really think we are helping people and that makes me feel that I’m useful,” Davis said. “I enjoy working with small businesses.”
