Montgomery, AL- On February 1st, the Council on Substance Abuse-NCADD (COSA-NCADD) began implementing peer-to-peer recovery support services through its Recovering in Rural Communities (RRC) Project. Funded by the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) for three years, the project will serve at least 400 individuals, ages 18 and older, in the River Region.
Similar to the success the organization experienced with a previous recovery project, COSA-NCADD is looking to use the same evidence-based peer-to-peer program model to prevent alcohol and substance abuse relapse and promote sustained recovery among individuals who have little or no access to recovery support services in their rural communities.
“Recovery happens in rural counties also,” states Shereda Finch, executive director. “Through this project, we want to give hope to those who aren’t aware that recovery is an option and provide as many supports and resources to them, including staff members who are in recovery and can relate.”
COSA-NCADD is partnering with an agency in each county to establish a program site in the communities of Ramer (Montgomery), Millbrook (Elmore), Prattville (Autauga) and Mosses (Lowndes). In addition to weekly recovery meetings, other project activities will take place at each site including recovery coaching, peer case management, information and referral, life skill development classes and social/ recreational activities.
Established in 1973, COSA-NCADD is 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization providing alcohol and substance abuse and related behavioral health prevention and recovery programs and services in seven counties in Alabama. The organization’s mission is to “reduce the incidence and prevalence of the disease of alcoholism, other drug addiction diseases, and related problems.”
