Gumptown Magazine (Montgomery, AL) The Alabama Democratic Conference (ADC) 56th Annual Convention was held February 12-13, 2016 at the Renaissance Hotel & Spa. The Kennedy- Johnson- King Black History Luncheon Program was held on that Saturday afternoon.
The theme for the luncheon was “Alabama Democrats United For Hillary”. Former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is on the ballot for this year’s presidential election.
Patricia Jones, Chair of ADC Lee County, Opelika presided over the event. Greetings were given by ADC officials across the state. The Honorable Nancy L. Worley set the tone for the luncheon when she said that the ADC is the largest and most organized group of the Democratic Party. Worley is Chair of the Alabama Democratic Party Democratic National Committee, Montgomery.
Commissioner Tyrone Moye, Chair of Clarke County ADC encouraged people to get out and vote in his greetings. Moye represented all of the County Commissioners in the ADC.
Mr. Darryl R. Sinkfield, ADC 3rd Congressional District Chair captured the audience with his 3 C’s, Committed, Courage, and Call. “We have to get back committed to the Democratic Party. Don’t be afraid and act like you’re scared to stand up for what is right. And we have to call all Democrats to the polls.”
The guest speaker was the Honorable Michael Nutter, Past Mayor of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Before he spoke, Nutter was presented the Key to the City of Tuskegee by the city’s mayor, the Honorable Johnny Ford.
Nutter talked about the importance of the upcoming election and Hillary becoming the next president of the United States. “Voting is always important. Every election is important” Nutter said as he explained how elected and appointed officials affect our everyday lives. “Flint wishes that they had somebody else in office so they can have clean water.”
Nutter also touched on Black History and how Montgomery played a pivotal role in civil rights. “Things happened here in [this] city that got us where we are today. We must teach and remind young people about these lessons.
