MONTGOMERY – The Wind Creek Wi-Fi Network, a high speed network available free to the public, officially goes live today for visitors, residents and businesses in downtown Montgomery thanks to a partnership between Wind Creek Hospitality, the Riverfront Foundation and the City of Montgomery.
“Whether it’s building Alabama’s first internet exchange or launching free downtown Wi-Fi, public-private partnerships play a pivotal role in spurring growth, inspiring innovation and shaping Montgomery’s future,” Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said. “We thank Wind Creek Hospitality for partnering with us – yet again – as we take another step in building a robust network of infrastructure and amenities that offer our residents and visitors an enhanced quality of life rivaling any city in the U.S.”
Made possible through technology from Montgomery-based Wise Broadband, the Wind Creek Downtown Wi-Fi network officially launched today to coincide with the Montgomery Biscuits home opener. Biscuits owner Sherrie Myers provided space in Riverwalk Stadium for Wise Broadband to install and operate access points needed to bring the network online. The company will soon install additional access points along Commerce Street to bring the total to 20. Installation along Commerce Street and around The Alley will be completed by the end of May.
“Wi-Fi by Wind Creek will enable students, businesses, residents and visitors to downtown Montgomery to access information, news and other important resources,” WCH Public Relations Manager Magi Thomley Williams said. “Free internet access is a win for students of all ages, for business owners, residents and tourists. When Wind Creek Hospitality and the Poarch Band of Creek Indians can help make the communities we serve better places, we win. We thank the City of Montgomery and the Riverfront Foundation for the opportunity to partner.”
The announcement came last month as Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange, DBA President Clay McInnis and Wind Creek Hospitality officials joined private sector leaders and entrepreneurs for the mayor’s weekly media briefing.
“Wind Creek’s free Wi-Fi network is a game changer for the city of Montgomery because it boosts the quality of life downtown and connects us digitally and as a community,” Montgomery Downtown Business Association President Clay McInnis said. “Today cell phone data is at a premium, and we want to give back to the community by adding another amenity to downtown Montgomery and the entertainment district. This is just the beginning of great things to come, and it wouldn’t be possible if all parties didn’t come together to make this happen!”
