Chief Ernest Finley Jr. was the guest speaker at Leadership Montgomery’s “Lunch with Leaders” on Thursday May 20. The luncheon was at the MACOA- Archibald Center downtown. The new Montgomery Police Department chief spoke about Building Community Partnerships.

Chief Finley’s vision is for Montgomery to be the safest and friendliest city in the South. His plan to achieve this is through community engagement. “It goes back to direct engagement” Chief Finley stated as he was expounding on his vision. “We cannot be afraid to go into communities and engage them.” Chief Finley says that community involvement is important, especially since most communities feel underserved and that no one cares about them.

One initiative already put into action is “Park, Walk, and Talk”, where police visit communities every week. They go door to door and talk face to face with citizens. Sometimes they may play a quick ball game with some kids. “We have to get out and walk and talk. No need for road blocks” Chief Finley said. “We will continue to come make your community safer.”

The Chief’s summer plans include developing partnerships with different businesses like the YMCA to engage with the youth.
