MONTGOMERY, AL- Mt. Meigs Accelerated Christian Academy (MMACA) is a Christian non-profit school for children 2 ½ years old through fifth grade. Located in the historic Mt. Meigs community, MMACA opened its doors in August 2012. The school currently has a student/teacher ratio of 11 to 1 and is approved for the Alabama Opportunity Scholarship and the Family Guidance Center.
MMACA was founded in response to the need of some students for a very small learning environment and differentiated or individualized instruction. The academy is operated by husband and wife duo Jerry and Genell Townsend. “We are totally committed to making sure that brilliant children get the opportunity to apply that brilliance in their lives and make a difference” said Jerry. “This is a program where we minister to the whole child- spiritually, academically, socially, and physically. It is the academic training we are involved in.”
The MMACA curriculum includes the Alabama educational standards. It also includes the Creative Curriculum System, which is recommended nationally for pre-school students. All students are taught basic Spanish, Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments, music, and art. “Children don’t get bored because it’s no stopping with the learning” Jerry shared. “If they learn one set of standards, we move them on to the next.”
The Townsends believe that the programs offered by MMACA are important because of class sizes, dedication of teachers, and the teaching of Christian values. They also believe that MMACA is an alternative for certain groups of parents and students who seek a smaller classroom environment and want to see Christian values openly displayed. “We are not a negative indictment on public schools at all” Genell said.
MMACA receives support from the Mt. Meigs Church of Christ. The school also has a Parent-Teacher-Friend Club that hosts various fundraisers and activities. “We are thankful for those who support the school” Jerry shared.
The Townsends are pleased with what is going on at the school. To set up a tour and learn more about the registration process, call 334-273-1255 or visit www.mmaca.org.
