Organization provides resources for Black farmers

The Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance is a cooperative association of Black farmers, landowners, and cooperatives. Born out of the Civil Rights movement, the federation exists to save Black-owned farms and land.

With offices in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Texas, the Federation serves as a one-stop shop for aspiring and established cooperatives, providing the tools and expertise needed to thrive.

“We help provide comprehensive support for Black farmers” said Outreach Specialist Amir Muhammad. “That support extends beyond financial assistance to guidance on legal structures, business planning, and resource acquisition.”

Amir does outreach in Alabama via the Alabama State Association of Cooperatives (ASAC), a member of the Federation. He recalls conversations with Black farmers in Alabama, their voices echoing with both hardship and hope. “They spoke of generations of land ownership threatened by economic hardship and discriminatory practices.  They spoke of a deep connection to the land, a heritage passed down through generations, and a fierce determination to preserve their legacy.”

Since 1967, the Federation has provided Black farmers access to funding, technical assistance, and educational opportunities with a focus on co-op development, land retention, advocacy.

The Federation uses a comprehensive approach that involves supporting the development of worker cooperatives, providing training on business management and land conservation, and advocating for policies that promote equitable access to resources.

Amir encourages farmers to become members of the Federation. “Membership isn’t just about financial assistance. You get access to educational resources, networking opportunities, and practical support for a modest annual fee.”
