Located in the old Harrison School Building, The Mark Gilmore Learning Center is a Christian- based organization. The learning center proudly caters to children 6 weeks to 14 years old. Under the direction of Jennifer Carter, The Mark Gilmore Learning Center is geared towards educating children so they won’t struggle in school.

The learning center is named after City Councilman Mark Gilmore, who served during the Eighties and Nineties. Gilmore was known for devoting time to help and improve schools in West and South Montgomery. He was known for being philanthropic in his efforts.

The Mark Gilmore Learning Center has an array of activities for children. They include soccer, baseball, basketball training, and dance. The Mommy & Me class is similar to yoga and allows mothers the opportunity to connect and bond with their children. The center also offers tutoring by certified teachers for only twenty dollars a week.

We took the time to ask the director, Jennifer Carter a few questions. Here’s what she had to share:

IN WHAT WAYS CAN LEARNING CENTERS BENEFIT FAMILIES, ESPECIALLY IN URBAN COMMUNITIES?

By providing children the opportunity to socialize and interact with other children versus sitting at home watching television. Most households in urban communities can’t afford daycare, so their children sit at home and watch TV. That is why we are a low cost center and provide financial assistance. Also, children can get a jump start on education at an early age.

IS THERE A CORRELATION BETWEEN LOW INCOME HOUSEHOLDS AND EDUCATION?

Low income families really do not have the funding to enroll their children in learning center programs. As a result their children sit at home all day versus learning and being involved in educational activities.

WHERE DO YOU SEE THE CENTER IN FIVE YEARS?

We are hoping to have a Pre-K program, and even starting a private school grades K-3.

To register your child, visit The Mark Gilmore Learning Center at 164 East South Blvd or call 334-233-0774. The registration fee is $25.
