Alabama State University, in its on-going effort to assist active-duty military personnel, service members, veterans and their dependents, has established the ASU Military Tuition Assistance Program.
ASU’s Dr. Tanjula Petty, who serves as the vice president for Institutional Effectiveness, Strategic Initiatives, and Transformation, has helped implement the program. She noted that the University has provided educational opportunities to members of all of the branches of the armed forces for decades and this latest initiative advances those efforts.
“Alabama State University greatly cares about its students who have an association with the armed services,” Petty said. “To honor these students and to remain a viable education opportunity for active-duty military personnel, service members, veterans and their dependents, the University is offering a $250 per semester hour educational tuition assistance cap in support of their professional and personal self-development goals.”
Petty explained that the tuition assistance rate applies to all active duty military personnel, including officers, warrant officers, and enlisted personnel; including active duty, as well as veterans and their dependents. The rate also is available to members of the Army National Guard and Army Reserve who are on active duty.
BACKGROUND DETAILS
The Department of Defense has directed that it will allow a uniform per semester hour cap of $250 for tuition assistance with a fiscal year cap of $4,000 (October – September). This includes a maximum of 16 credit hours that may be covered per fiscal year. The 39-semester hour limit applies to all credits taken after completion of a baccalaureate degree.
GREATER MONTGOMERY AREA IS HOME FOR MANY MILITARY
The Military Tuition Assistance Program has particular importance given the large number of service men and women, and veterans who reside In the greater Montgomery area. Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base alone serves more than 25,000 active duty military personnel, their family members, civilians, contractors, and retirees.

Dr. Petty explained that it is incumbent on ASU to offer the members of the military a reward for their service to our nation and provide an incentive to attend Alabama State University.
“The University, under the leadership of its president, Dr. Quinton T. Ross, Jr., desires that Alabama State University be the first choice of military service members, veterans and dependents both to attend school at ASU and graduate from it. This is yet another example of our esteem for these honorable men and women,” Petty said. “President Ross acknowledges the personal sacrifices made by service men and women and therefore desires that Alabama State stands ready to support these individuals in their pursuit to expand their education.”
