(Montgomery, AL)— Trenholm State Community College (TSCC) is continuing to meet the needs of students and is also serving the needs of the community. TSCC (TSCC) along with other Alabama community colleges within the Alabama Community College System (ACCS) were asked to take inventory of all their Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and ventilators in case area hospitals and public health facilities suffered shortages of critically needed supplies and equipment due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

As a result, Trenholm State was ready to help when Kenneth Kirkland, Director of Health Programs for ACCS, contacted Dr. Traci Carter, Associate Dean of Allied Health at TSCC, on the evening of April 3, 2020. Kirkland asked if Trenholm State could assist the East Alabama Medical Center (EAMC) with a ventilator. “I immediately contacted Juan Taylor, Director of Clinical Education for Respiratory Therapy, and relayed the urgency of the request,” said Dr. Carter.

At 8:00 a.m. the next morning, Taylor met the EMS transport dispatch personnel from EAMC at the main Trenholm State Campus to facilitate the loan of the ventilator. “We are fortunate to have ten excellent programs of study in Nursing and the Allied Health Division at Trenholm State, which all offer nationally recognized certifications and licenses,” said Dr. Carter.

Trenholm State’s Respiratory Therapy program was established in fall 2019. TSCC continues to deliver high-quality online instruction to our students and training to our front-line and first responder workforce during this challenging time.
