For almost seven years, Dr. Jacqui Virgil has been helping student athletes with going to college. Through Collegiate Home-based Academic Preparation Services (C.H.A.P.S.) Inc, Virgil has helped student athletes attain scholarships for college by teaching the importance of education.

“Academics is the catalyst to everything that you can be a part of” Virgil said. “It is important to work hard in class like you do on the field.”

Founded in 2011, C.H.A.P.S. Inc. is a company designed to develop, enhance, and train student-athletes for national standardized tests, such as the American College Test (ACT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), according to the standards set by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA).

Virgil is a former coach on the collegiate level. While coaching, she began to notice that many athletes were not academically prepared to advance to D-1 and D-2 sports. She also noticed that there was a lack of performance on the ACT Test. To understand the concept of the test, Virgil decided to examine the ACT herself. Virgil soon saw the opportunity to make a difference and C.H.A.P.S. was born.

“I wanted to tell all of the high school principals and athletic directors and my first stop was Lanier” Virgil said while sharing how she first started. “I talked to Coach Angelo Wheeler and he bought into my vision. Then Coach Richard Moncrief gave me my first student from Jeff Davis. The student told his friends and I ended up with 6 students the first year.”

As of today C.H.A.P.S. Inc. has helped almost 100 students obtain $3.6 million in academic and athletic scholarships. Students are currently enrolled at, or have graduated from 27 colleges/universities. For more information about C.H.A.P.S. Inc. visit www.wegetemd1.com.

Virgil graduated from Alabama State University with a degree in Therapeutic Recreation. She earned a Master’s in Sports Science from U.S. Sports Academy and recently received a Doctorate in Education is Sports Management and Leadership from the same institution. Virgil is currently the Director of Community Education for Wilmer Hall in Mobile, AL.
