Montgomery taps civic tech leader RoadBotics to implement AI-based infrastructure planning and improvement program

MONTGOMERY – RoadBotics, one of the country’s leading road monitoring technology companies, will conduct a pilot scan this week assessing Montgomery’s road conditions through its AI-based, cutting-edge proprietary program. City of Montgomery officials anticipate using RoadBotics’ assessment to adopt a data-driven approach to future paving projects that could result in bigger taxpayer savings, increased efficiencies and longer-lasting roads.

“As Montgomery continues our journey to becoming a leader among America’s Smart Cities, we must explore new technologies that benefit our residents and preserve our resources,” Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said. “Testing RoadBotics’ effectiveness in optimizing infrastructure throughout our city could lead to safer, smoother travel and newfound cost savings for our city organization thanks to smarter decision making.”

RoadBotics on July 24 deployed a team of their certified operation technicians to Montgomery. Over the course of one week, the technicians will drive a designated portion of Montgomery’s road network, collecting image data of the roads using a windshield-mounted smartphone.

The team will then upload the data to RoadBotics’ secure cloud where it will be analyzed using machine learning technology – a process where a computer views all of the images’ data to automatically assess Montgomery’s roadways for damage. The machine learning process will give each road segment a 1-5 rating based on the severity of surface damage (e.g., potholes and cracks).

RoadBotics’ machine learning pavement assessments enable the City of Montgomery to possess up-to-date information about its infrastructure at an unprecedented speed, while also offering precision and affordability. Montgomery is committed to using the latest in cutting-edge technology to advance its quality of service and overall quality of life for residents, visitors and job creators.
The results of the pilot program will be released in coming weeks.
